Family Friendly Guides for K-12 Math

Family Friendly Guides for K-12 Math have been updated and posted in English and Spanish versions to the Education Oversight Committee's Expect More SC website. Each Family Friendly Guide outlines grade level expectations and ways that parents can support their student at home. Expect More SC is a great online resource parents and families can utilize to help their children succeed in school. Parents and caregivers can find more grade-level standards for English Language Arts, Science, and Social Science under the "What Students Need to Learn" tab on the Expect More SC website.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is i-Ready MyPath?
i-Ready MyPath is an online learning program that gives your child lessons made just for them based on their strengths and areas for growth. It adjusts as they learn and helps fill in any gaps while challenging them at the right level.

  • How often should my child be on MyPath?
Students typically work on MyPath at least 45 minutes per subject each week. Consistency is key — short, focused sessions are better than long marathons.

  • Does MyPath replace classroom instruction?
No! MyPath is meant to support classroom learning, not replace it. Teachers still teach grade-level standards in class; MyPath provides extra personalized practice at your child’s level.

  • Can my child work on MyPath at home?
Yes! Students can log in from home through ClassLink or the i-Ready website. A quiet space and encouragement from you can make a big difference.

  • What should I do if my child gets frustrated?
In the classroom, we push productive struggle. We want students to gain a sense of perseverance when it comes to harder math concepts! Remind them to take their time and do their best — the lessons will adjust as they learn. Encourage effort and persistence, not perfection.

  • What is the i-Ready Math Curriculum?
It’s our core math program that teaches South Carolina’s math standards using hands-on lessons, visuals, and real-world problems. Students learn to understand why math works, not just how to solve it.

  • How is this different from traditional math instruction?
Students don’t just memorize steps — they explore, discuss, and connect ideas. Lessons include “Try It – Discuss It – Connect It” routines that build deeper understanding.

  • What are manipulatives, and why are they used?
Manipulatives are tools like counters, blocks, and number lines that help students visualize math concepts and make abstract ideas easier to understand. We want ALL students to feel comfortable using these tools to help them gain math conceptual understanding.

  • How are students supported if they struggle?
Teachers use classwork, MyPath data, and small-group lessons to meet each student’s needs — providing reteaching or enrichment as needed.

  • How can I help my child at home?
Ask them how they solved a problem, encourage them to explain their thinking, and celebrate their progress. Even simple math conversations make a big difference!

  • How does this program prepare my child for the future?
It builds problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills — the same thinking skills students need for middle school, high school, and beyond.

  • How do these two programs fit together?

  1. Diagnostic Check-Ins: At the beginning, middle, and end of the year, students take an i-Ready Diagnostic — a short assessment that helps teachers understand each child’s current math skills and areas for growth.

  1. Personalized MyPath Lessons: Based on Diagnostic results, i-Ready creates a MyPath — a set of online lessons personalized to your child’s specific needs. These lessons focus on filling gaps, strengthening understanding, and building confidence over time.

  1. Classroom Math Instruction: In class, teachers use the data from i-Ready to plan whole-group and small-group lessons that match South Carolina’s math standards. Students engage in hands-on activities, discussion, and problem-solving during these lessons.

  1. Blended Learning: Students move between teacher-led instruction in the classroom and individualized MyPath lessons on their devices. The online work reinforces and supports what’s being taught in class.

  1. Ongoing Growth & Updates: Each time students take a new Diagnostic, their MyPath adjusts to reflect their progress. Teachers use these updated results to refine instruction and celebrate growth.
